COVID Recovery Stories: How Long-Hauler Sandra Regained her Mobility, Energy & Taste

Summary

Sandra, an anthropologist and mother, contracted COVID-19 early in the pandemic and developed severe long-haul symptoms affecting her physical and cognitive function. Over the course of nearly a year, her condition worsened to the point of full disability. Despite extensive testing, no clear medical explanation was found. After beginning DNRS, she experienced rapid improvements and ultimately returned to full independence and an active, engaged life.

When Everything Changed

Sandra was healthy and active before contracting COVID-19 in early 2020.

What followed was not a typical recovery. While the initial infection passed, her health did not return with it. Instead, symptoms began to accumulate—subtle at first, then increasingly disruptive.

Over the course of the next several months, her condition continued to deteriorate. What had started as lingering fatigue and discomfort gradually developed into something far more complex and difficult to explain.

A Rapid Decline

As her condition worsened, Sandra experienced symptoms that affected nearly every part of her daily life.

Physically, she became weaker and increasingly unsteady. At one point, she lost control of her legs entirely, describing how they would no longer respond as expected, “as if the signal from my brain didn’t reach all the way.” Even short distances became difficult, and basic tasks required significant effort.

At the same time, her cognitive function began to decline. Concentration, memory, and coordination were all affected, to the point where she describes the experience as resembling dementia. At her worst, she reached a stage where she could no longer write, unable to recall what letters looked like or how to form them.

Eventually, her condition progressed to full disability. She required a wheelchair, could barely move, and was no longer able to care for herself or her daughter independently.

“I was fully disabled… I’ve never been so miserable in all my life.”

Despite the severity of her symptoms, repeated medical testing continued to return normal results, leaving her without clear answers while her condition continued to decline.

Understanding What Was Happening

With a background in research, Sandra approached her condition with determination to understand what was happening.

When she was introduced to the concept of neuroplasticity and the role of the limbic system, something clicked. The idea that the brain could remain in a prolonged state of threat—and in turn affect multiple systems in the body—offered a framework that finally made sense of her experience.

“It made sense to me… I had gone through a very traumatic event with the COVID-19 infection.”

Rather than seeing her symptoms as separate and unrelated, she began to understand them as part of a broader pattern—one rooted in how the brain was responding after the initial illness.

A Return to Life

Sandra began the DNRS program in February 2021, and the changes came quickly.

Within days, she was able to go for short walks in her neighborhood—something that had previously been out of reach. As her energy and strength returned, her progress accelerated.

Within a month, she returned to work part-time, and by May, she was working full-time again.

From there, her life continued to expand. She regained independence, resumed daily activities, and re-engaged with her family and home life in ways that had once felt impossible.

Today, she describes herself as fully restored.

“I lead a very active life… everything I couldn’t do before.”

She now cooks, exercises, cares for her home, and spends active, engaged time with her daughter. She has even taken on a new professional role—something she once believed would not be possible again so soon.

Looking ahead, her focus is no longer on illness or limitation, but on possibility.

“I’m looking forward to a lot of adventures with my daughter.”

She returned to daily activities, began exercising, and re-engaged fully with life—cooking, caring for her home, and spending active time with her daughter.

Today, Sandra describes herself as fully restored, with a renewed sense of possibility and a future that once felt uncertain is now open again.
